Privacy Policy

Building Guessr (“we,” “our,” or “the site”) respects your privacy. This policy describes what data we collect and how we use it.

Information We Collect

Data you provide: We do not require an account to play. If you contact us, we may receive your email address and message content.

Automatically collected data: When you visit Building Guessr, we and our service providers (such as Google Analytics and, if applicable, Google AdSense) may collect:

Local Storage & Cookies

We use your browser’s local storage to save game progress, scores, settings, and preferences so your experience persists across visits. We do not use this data to identify you personally.

We may use cookies for analytics (e.g. Google Analytics) and, if ads are enabled, for ad serving (e.g. Google AdSense). You can control cookies through your browser settings.

Feedback Forms

If you send feedback through our contact page or the in-game feedback box, we receive what you type: the category you choose, your message, the page you sent it from, and your email address if you chose to provide one. Email is optional and we ask for it only so we can reply.

Form submissions are processed and stored by Netlify, our hosting provider, acting as our data processor. We keep submissions for as long as they remain useful for fixing the problem reported, and delete them after that.

We do not use feedback submissions for advertising, and we do not share them with third parties except as needed to operate the site.

Leaderboard

Posting a score to the daily leaderboard is optional. Nothing is sent from your browser unless you tick the consent box and press Submit on the final screen. If you never do, the leaderboard collects nothing about you at all.

When you do post a score, we store: the nickname you chose, your score, how many standing-status answers you got right, your average distance from the buildings, which five buildings the day used, a random identifier your browser generated for itself, and a one-way hash of your IP address combined with a secret and the date.

The IP hash exists solely to limit how many scores can be posted from one connection per day. We never store your IP address itself, the hash cannot be reversed back to it, and the hash changes daily. There is no account, no email address, and no cookie involved in any of this.

Your nickname and score are public: anyone who visits the leaderboard page can see them. Individual entries are deleted 30 days after they are posted. Aggregate daily and all-time totals computed from them are kept indefinitely; apart from the nickname of each day’s top scorer, which we keep alongside that day’s summary so the record stands, these totals contain nothing that identifies a player.

To have an entry removed sooner, contact us through the contact page with the nickname and date.

How We Use Information

Third Parties

We may use Google Analytics and, when approved, Google AdSense. These services have their own privacy policies. We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

Data Retention

Analytics data are retained according to our providers’ policies. Data stored locally in your browser remains until you clear it.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your data. You can clear local storage and cookies via your browser. For other requests, contact us via the Contact page.

Children

Building Guessr is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will reflect the latest version.
